Chimneys

Creosote accumulation is the main reason for cleaning a chimney. Buildup of creosote on a chimney's inside surface can ignite, resulting in a chimney fire. Chimneys require maintenance cleaning to prevent this buildup, thereby reducing the possibility of a chimney fire.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends yearly chimney inspections and/or cleanings, depending on your usage. This will not only promote your home heating efficiency, but will also ensure you and your family's peace of mind by eliminating carbon monoxide intrusion and reducing the risk of chimney fires. Cleaning the chimney yourself is always an option, but be sure that you have the time, the proper equipment and know-how, and the physical stamina required to complete the work.

Keep in mind that if you don't repair cracks or holes in the flue, a chimney fire could be very dangerous. Even during normal use, the sparks generated by a fire could go through the cracks or holes into the attic or the framework surrounding the chimney. This could cause a serious house fire, resulting in loss of property and possibly loss of life.
